Morgan and Kim’s Running Page

This may sound like a ho hum page thrown together for someone to keep track of their running. It isn’t, Morgan and Kim have some very good calculators for getting distance and elevation for routes in the Stanford (California) area.

What makes the calculators interesting is that there are routes already identified, all you need to do is click the segments hit the Compute button and the site will calculate the route distance, as well as climb and descent.
Info from their site - check it out.

Stanford-area - Common road runs and runs on the (paved) Stanford Hills trails.

Stanford/Palo Alto/Los Altos - Expanded (relative to Stanford-area calculator), including western Palo Alto/Los Altos, and much of Los Altos Hills. Warning for dialup connections: Map image is almost 1 MB

Rancho San Antonio - This popular open space preserve near Cupertino, CA has a network of well-trodden trails, most with considerable elevation gain.

RecPath - It’s free (and worth every penny)

RecPath is a google map to let you draw a route across a map and tells you how far the route goes. Similar to others out there, the link to the actual map is at the bottom of the page so don’t skip over it.

When you get to the map and are looking for a way to drill in to your location look for an icon with some green on it, second from the right, by the question mark. Type in your address and it does the standard map stuff for route planning.

County backs trail plan

Lewis and Clark County officials unanimously backed a resolution Tuesday supporting a proposed Helena-to-Great Falls pedestrian trail.

The commission asked the group behind the Corps of Discovery trail effort to guarantee maintenance, restrooms, trash cans, weed control and any necessary fencing.

Their action is symbolic, as BNSF Railway must first decide if they want to abandon the 95-mile scenic route, which has sat unused due to railbed erosion and undersized tunnels.

Commissioner Mike Murray said the trail could provide jobs and businesses, like bed-and-breakfast operations and bike shops in places like Craig and Wolf Creek.

“My vote was to support economic development,” Murray said.

Like those for and against the trail, Murray said it’s the commission’s first preference to see the railroad remain.

Landowners have said they’re worried about trespassing, a loss of privacy and generally having people on their land.

Canyon Creek-area rancher Ed Chevallier said he was disappointed in the commission.

“To me having that trail in my front yard would be the same as me running 500 head of cattle through Helena,” Chevallier said. He said he’s not against bikers, but doesn’t see why they can’t use old forest roads or places for riding. Chevallier said he’s doubtful all users will stay on the trail — and not wander onto private property.
