Heat is on in runner’s marathon training

A former police officer has found the perfect way to prepare for the world’s most gruelling marathon - by sitting in a sauna everyday in full running gear.

Donald Sandeman, 50, is taking part in the 154-mile Marathon des Sables through the Sahara to raise money for cancer care charity Marie Curie.

The part-time taxi driver from Fairmilehead, who retired from the police last year, has worked out a strict training regime in the run-up to the six-day race which will see him competing in temperatures of up to 50C.

Mr Sandeman, who completed the 54-mile Thames Meander last month as part of his training, contacted Edinburgh Leisure to ask permission to use its sauna at Warrender Baths - where he has sat in 30 degrees, wearing his full backpack and running gear, for one and a half hours every day for the past six weeks.

He also goes for daily runs on the Pentland Hills carrying a 24lb pack and trains on sand dunes in Gullane.

Heien convicted in hit and run

A Plymouth County jury has convicted Richard Heien in the hit-and-run death of Joan Wilson.

Heien was charged with hitting Wilson on a rural Brunsville road while jogging on May 2, 2004, then leaving the scene. On Monday, David Probst testified that he smelled alcohol on Heien’s breath when he saw him the morning of the accident.

Heien faced charges of vehicular homocide, involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He was found guilty on all charges. His sentencing will be set at a later date.

The jury began deliberations mid-morning Tuesday, deliberating for an hour before announcing its decision shortly around 11:30 a.m. Heien sat stoic as the verdict was read.

Neil Wilson, Joan’s husband was reserved, but said justice was served. “We just praised the Lord for the fact that the truth came out. We live in a fallen world and truth is at a premium.”

WHAT MAKES APPLEFEST SUCH A GREAT EVENT?

The Applefest Half Marathon in Hollis, New Hampshire provides more awards and rewards than any other half marathon.

The course travels a beautiful, scenic, rural New England course in peak foliage season. This run is beautiful; it is rewarding, it is Applefest.

Many run for the challenging course, many run for the beauty of the course. Many run just for the post-race food—especially the famous apple crisp or the beautiful long-sleeve T’s. And again this year, there is a relay—a relay gets more popular every year.

Slow going for new recreation trail

A 14-mile trail that would run from Denmark in southern Brown County to Rockwood just north of Manitowoc holds promise for outdoors enthusiasts.

But the Devils River State Recreation Trail is far from a done deal.

“So much depends on the availability of funds and whether we can use several existing bridges,” said Mike Demske, director of Manitowoc County Planning and Parks Department.

The project initially was known as the DenRock Trail when it was approved in 1996. The trail was renamed for one of the most scenic spots on the trail, the Devils River crossing.

“It’s breathtaking,” Demske said. The rail trestle towers 100 feet above the river.

The trail also travels near the Maribel Caves, through rural fields, woodlands and over a bridge spanning the West Twin River and through Francis Creek.

Running technique

Below Mark Holroyd, an exercise physiologist from BUPA’s Bristol Wellness centre, explains how you can treat develop the correct running technique.

Why is a good running technique important?

Running technique is a topic that few runners pay particular attention to, however it is essential for:

Economical running - Correct technique can maximise the economy of running by eliminating unnecessary movement and thus wasted motion. To put it simply, runners want all their energy to produce straight ahead movement, as opposed to side-to-side motion

Minimising the chance of injury - When we walk one foot is always on the ground, and our forward foot hits the surface with a force equal to approximately half our body weight. When running this force is much greater, as there is a non-contact phase when both feet are off the ground. During running the foot strikes the surface with a force greater than three times our bodyweight. A combination of correct running technique and using appropriate running equipment can help to reduce these landing forces and therefore the stress on our bones and muscles, minimising the chance of injury.

So what is correct running technique?

With respect to running technique, the most important concept is to run tall and relaxed. Running tall is equivalent to running light, and this is essential for efficient running. Consider the following points when assessing your running technique.
