Management of lower extremity malalignment during running with neuromuscular retraining of the proximal stabilizers

Management of lower extremity malalignment during running with neuromuscular retraining of the proximal stabilizers.

Curr Sports Med Rep. 2006 May ; 5(3): 137-40

This case report presents a high-level female runner with a history of more than 25 years of recurrent lower extremity (LE) injuries and LE malalignment problems during running. Due to her LE malalignment, she has been unable to run for the past 3 years.

A definitive diagnosis was not found for her inability to run so by exclusion we diagnosed dysfunction of the hip, spine, and pelvic stabilizers that resulted in her in LE malalignment. To treat this muscle weakness, we designed a Pilates-evolved functional movement intervention to improve the control and strength of the proximal stabilizers and regain normal LE alignment.

The Pilates-evolved treatment approach involved a series of functional and progressive resistance exercises designed to dynamically stabilize the spine, pelvis, and hip through all planes of motion. After 1 year of Pilates-evolved training, the athlete’s disabling movement pattern resolved and she has returned to a regular running program.

The purpose of this case report is to describe a Pilates-evolved functional movement intervention that resolved this runner’s LE malalignment and returned her to running when other traditional treatment approaches were not effective in doing so.

Soldiers to run ‘alongside’ loved ones in marathon

Nearly 375 deployed soldiers will run today in the Iraq version of the Country Music Marathon at Camp Speicher, near Tikrit.

Soldiers will be able to participate in a full or a half marathon, complete with an awards ceremony, medals and published race results.

Many soldiers and spouses participate in the annual Country Music Marathon in Nashville, and the idea to create a companion marathon and half marathon in Iraq came from soldiers deployed with the 101st Airborne Division. About 290 participants in Iraq have registered to run in the half marathon and 83 in the full marathon, according to Fort Campbell’s Public Affairs Office. The Nashville event is expected to draw more than 22,000 runners.

The Association of the U.S. Army helped coordinate donations for the race in Iraq.

“They (deployed soldiers) wanted a connection with home,” said Judy Fish, local AUSA chapter executive director. “Since several of the soldiers would be running if they were here, they decided to run it there so they could have that connection from home.

Average Athletic Shoe Prices Rose 2% In 2005

With advances in average prices outnumbering declines more than two to one for the 22 categories of athletic and sports footwear surveyed by the National Sporting Goods Association, the average price point for all footwear rose 2.0% in 2005.

In 2005, the average price rose to $40.33 versus $39.32 in 2004 and $38.88 in 2003. In 2004, the average price rose 1.7%; in 2003, it had declined 0.3%.

More than 2% increases in major categories — jogging/running (+4.2%), gym shoes/sneakers (+2.6%), and walking shoes (+2.4%) — led the overall increase. Among major categories, only tennis shoes (down 1.7%) and basketball shoes (down 1.0%) showed declines.

“The 2.0% increase in 2005 and the 1.1% increase in 2004 followed downturns in the three previous years, 0.3%, 3.0% and 0.4% respectively,” said NSGA VP/information & research Thomas Doyle. “However, the year’s overall average just matched the 2000 average price of $40.32, the highest in the history of the NSGA survey. The weaker promotional environment and exciting new products probably accounts for the 2005 growth.”

5K race raises money for cancer research

Road runners will take to the streets of downtown Sylva for the Greening Up the Mountain’s annual 5K race, held at 9 a.m. the morning of the festival.

Racers are encouraged to sign up in advance by visiting the Jackson County Recreation Department, picking up a brochure at Motion Makers Bike Shop or going online to www.rec.jacksonnc.org. Registration is $20. All runners will receive a T-shirt and goody bag.

Race day registration also is available beginning at 8:15 a.m. the day of the race.

This year’s 5K will serve as a fundraiser for a Relay for Life team lead by Rec Department Wellness Coordinator Jennifer Pressley.

“This is my team’s main fundraiser,” Pressley said.

The partnership allows runners to get some exercise and give back to their community.

“The majority of the money comes right back to Jackson County,” Pressley said. “It provides resources for people who have recently been diagnosed with cancer.”

The race will begin at Mark Watson Park, winding its way up behind the historic courthouse with two climbs up Savannah Drive and Wilkes Crescent, and returning to the park for the finish.

For more information about the race, call 828.293.3053.
