Marathon runner is ageless wonder

Instead of waiting for his wife to get the kids ready, Milt Bushey decided to run for it. The swimming pool, that is.

After he got home from work and it was time to take the family to the pool, Bushey would run over to the pool and his wife, Barbara, would drive the four kids over in the family van.

The thing is, the pool was 6.5 miles away — with a 1.5-mile-long hill climb, to boot.

So, it wasn’t exactly a light jog, but Bushey would still beat his wife to the pool sometimes.

Admittedly, Bushey said that had more to do with the time it takes to get four kids ready, as opposed to him having Superman-like speed. But the run still gave the high school coach and teacher a chance to release the stresses of the day.

“Running helps me relax,” Bushey said. “It just gets you away from everything. It gives you a chance to work through everything in your head.”

Reis running for win, and maybe record, in marathon

Chris Reis intends to bring home the bacon when he races in Cincinnati’s annual Flying Pig Marathon on May 7.

The Delhi Township native and 1999 Elder High School graduate estimates he runs between 100 to 110 miles per week in preparation for the marathon and is coached by former Xavier University cross country coach Randy Cox.

“My goal is to win,” Reis said. “The course record is 2:21:15 and breaking that is in the back of my mind.”

Reis said years of training on Cincinnati’s west side gives him a distinct advantage over out-of-town runners because he is accustomed with the city’s hilly terrain.

“When you run up these hills it helps with strength,” said Reis. “I’m more of a strength guy than a speed guy.”

“When he (Reis) gets out in front to run, no one can go head to head with him,” said Kurtis Smith, Reis’s training partner. “He refuses to lose.”

Should Reis win the Flying Pig Marathon, he will own two-thirds of Cincinnati’s triple crown of road racing.

Reis recently won Cincinnati’s 2006 15K Heart Mini-Marathon with a time of 46:40 on March 26 and would need only a victory at the 2006 Thanksgiving Day Race to complete the trifecta.
