A comparison of pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics in middle- and long-distance runners

A comparison of pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics in middle- and long-distance runners.

Kilding AE, Winter EM, Fysh M

Int J Sports Med. 2006 May ; 27(5): 419-26

The purpose of this study was two-fold:

1) to compare the on- and off-transient pulmonary oxygen uptake (VO2) kinetics, in the moderate-intensity domain, of middle-distance (MD) and long-distance (LD) runners and

2) to determine the relationship between the volume of training and VO2 kinetics. With institutional ethics approval, 16 competitive male MD (800/1500 m) and 16 competitive male LD runners (5000/10 000 m) participated in the study.

Each runner completed a series of tests to assess maximal VO2 (VO2max), ventilatory threshold (V(T)), and both the on- and off-transient primary time constants (tauon and tauoff, respectively) in response to moderate-intensity treadmill exercise.

The results showed that tauon was significantly shorter in LD (12.3 +/- 0.5 s) than MD runners (16.4 +/- 1.0 s, p = 0.002). During recovery from exercise, tauoff was shorter in LD than MD runners (tauoff, 24.3 +/- 0.6 s vs. 26.9 +/- 0.8 s, p = 0.017). The volume of training was greater in LD (66.6 +/- 3.5 km x wk(-1)) than MD runners (43.5 +/- 3.9 km x wk(-1), p < 0.001) and was related to tauon in both groups of runner (MD: r = - 0.63, p = 0.009; LD: r = - 0.68, p = 0.004).

Collectively, the results show that MD and LD runners can be differentiated on the basis of their on- and off-transient VO2 kinetics, despite similarities of VO2max and V(T). This is attributable to the greater volume of training performed by LD runners. Further investigations into adaptation(s) to training in muscle in MD and LD runners is required to determine the functional significance of such differences and the response of VO2 kinetic parameters to different training stimuli.

Joining the nation, gripped by Marathon Madness, is no mean feet

One of the many incredible things about living opposite a park for the first time ever – watching the trees act out the seasons, the abundant oxygen, the lack of ambulance sirens shrieking up the street – is the incredible amount of guilt.

There they go, day after day, jog-jog-jog, these unstoppable fitness militants all vim, purpose and bottles of water with in-built grip, first thing in the morning as you sit there wondering just how many more hours of your fast-decreasing lifetime will you waste watching The Wright Stuff listening to the indispensable opinions on our immigration troubles from Anthony Costa out of Blue (who is, at least, being more productive with his morning than you are…)

The other day, though, something finally cracked, the day after a four-hour get-together “lunch” which involved the pub, no grub whatsoever and three packets of 10 fags gustily smoked between three recently given-up “non-smokers”. This, after six consecutive pub nights, where midnight meals were involved, inducing what we know in the trade as ‘writer’s arse’ while the mood mysteriously dipped and the complexion paled to a deathly, toxic grey. And so you find yourself, for the first time ever, staring out the kitchen window to where the path to the park begins and saying, “I am going … right now … for a run …”

Husband and Wife Claim 5K Run Titles

The finish of Saturday’s Ogden Newspapers 5K Run for Your Health was a family affair with a Pennsylvania husband-wife pairing claiming the men’s and women’s crowns.

Peter and Jeannette Boyd of Union City, Pa., took the men’s and women’s top spots for the Ogden 5K Run, finishing at 16:10 and 19:14 respectively.

“This was a great course,” said Peter Boyd, 31, although he added that the weather was a little muggy during the run.

“Sometimes we train together, but between work and family it’s hard,” Jennette said, adding that the couple has two children, meaning they often take turns and run separately.
