Physiological left ventricular hypertrophy or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in an elite adolescent athlete: role of detraining in resolving the clinical dilemma

Physiological left ventricular hypertrophy or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in an elite adolescent athlete: role of detraining in resolving the clinical dilemma.

Basavarajaiah S, Wilson M, Junagde S, Jackson G, Whyte G, Sharma S, Roberts WO

Br J Sports Med. 2006 Aug ; 40(8): 727-9; discussion 729

The differentiation of physiological left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) can prove challenging for even the most experienced cardiologists. The case is presented of a 17 year old elite swimmer who had electrocardiographic and echocardiographic features that were highly suggestive of HCM. However, indices of diastolic function were normal and cardiopulmonary exercise testing revealed high peak oxygen consumption in keeping with physiological LVH. To resolve the diagnostic dilemma, the patient underwent detraining for eight weeks, after which, there was complete resolution of the changes seen on electrocardiogram and echocardiogram, indicating physiological LVH rather than HCM.

Big Strides:Yankee Homecoming Races have become a big-time event

When Yankee Homecoming Race Director Jon Pearson thinks about the Yankee Homecoming 5K and 10-mile races 20 years ago, his smile is evident through a phone line.

Sponsors were a little hard to come by back then, but there were always two he could count on: beer and running shoe companies.

“It is much easier now,” noted Pearson, who has 14 sponsors for this year’s races, most of which approached him. “Sponsors look for events of this size.”

The 45th running of the Yankee Homecoming 5K and 10-mile road races will be held Tuesday at 6:25 (5K) and 6:35 (10-mile) beginning and ending at Newburyport High School.

Racing against cancer

Christian McElvoy, 23, of Fairfield, Connecticut pushes forward on his six-month journey running across America in support of cancer research and survivors. He started July 1 in San Francisco and hopes to end in December in Rhode Island. This week he was passing through Fallon, running eastward along Highway 50. McElvoy took up this cause because a friend’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and he wanted to do something to raise awareness for cancer survivors. His schedule has him running up to 20 miles a day with a couple of days off per week.

What started as just an idea scribbled on a napkin has become the challenge of running across the country to help cancer survivors for one Maryland man.

Christian McEvoy, 23, is running from San Francisco to Rhode Island in an effort to raise awareness of cancer survivorship and money for the Connecticut Challenge Adult Survivorship Center at Yale Cancer Center. McEvoy left San Francisco on July 1 and hopes to finish the trek sometime in November.

He passed through Dayton and Silver Springs last week, and is spending several days in Fallon this week before heading into the Great Basin.
