Island Stars In Record Half-Marathon

An Island woman athlete wore the widest grin of the day at the IW half marathon on Sunday.

Sharon McNally, representing IW Athletic Club, came home as the first lady in a time of 1.37.38 and 30th overall. “Absolutely delighted and quite shocked,” said Sharon, from Wootton.

“It is the first time I have won a race like this and is great preparation for my ultimate goal this year. I have been in serious training for the Amsterdam Marathon in October.

“I have been running around 60 miles a week and it certainly paid off last weekend. It was a bonus because we are used to running over the hills that the Island presents, so I maybe had a big advantage.”

There was a record entry of 232 for the 20th half marathon, organised by Ryde Harriers. Despite the blustery conditions, Aldershot Farnham and District’s Elliot Robinson blew the opposition away and came home in an amazing one hour ten minutes 30 seconds, almost eight minutes ahead of second place Paul Bleach, of City of Portsmouth.
