Exercise and Crohn’s disease: Speculations on potential benefits
Exercise and Crohn’s disease: Speculations on potential benefits.

Can J Gastroenterol. 2006 Oct ; 20(10): 657-60
Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects nearly one million people in the United States and Canada. While current pharmaceutical treatments are effective in controlling symptoms, patients continue to experience a reduced quality of life (QOL).
Based on preliminary studies, QOL in CD patients may be improved by engaging in physical activity. Exercise may decrease CD activity and reduce psychological stress. Current research also suggests that low-intensity exercise does not exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms and does not lead to flare-ups. Furthermore, exercise appears to reduce CD symptoms and improve QOL.
In summary, physical activity may be beneficial to certain patient groups, but more studies are needed before broad recommendations can be made.

Snow joke: Ultra marathoner trains in freezer
It’s 72 degrees and sunny, the way it usually is here. In a city full of golf courses and beaches, Mike Pierce is spending his afternoon … in a commercial freezer?
The 42-year-old is training for the Antarctic 100K on Dec. 15, so he needs a place that’s really, really c-c-cold to prepare for the ultra marathon, which will cover 62.1 miles on the f-f-frozen continent on the bottom of the planet.

Two or three times a week, he heads down the freeway from his suburban home to a cold-storage warehouse and heads for freezer box No. 9.
There, in a 60-by-40-foot space, among pallets of frozen food piled to the ceiling, with fans blowing in frosty air and the thermometer hovering around minus-5, he can simulate all the discomforts of Antarctica, minus the ice and rock.
Of course, most people think he’s crazy.
