Leader of the pack: Ridgecrest’s Carol Wolfe recently completed her 51st marathon

Say the word “marathon” and one immediately conjures up a picture of some bone-thin man or woman, usually of third-world descent, running through the streets of some city and splashing water on themselves as they race toward the finish line. But like icebergs, the bulk of runners that make up the field for any big marathon are seldom seen or heard from in coverage by the media.

Ridgecrest’s Carol Wolfe is one such runner.

While running an event, Wolfe looks like most of the entrants. She has her shoes, shorts and hat all in place, along with a number afixed to her to identify her as a registered participant. But the likeness between her and some Nigerian phenom end there.

Blood pressure lowering through physical training–what can be achieved?

Blood pressure lowering through physical training–what can be achieved?

Schwarz S, Halle M

MMW Fortschr Med. 2006 Nov 23; 148(47): 29-30, 32

In the meantime, the positive effect of physical training, both in primary and secondary prevention of hypertension, has been confirmed in numerous studies. In recent years, it has been shown that regular sports activity of moderate intensity suffices to bring about a lowering of blood pressure. Highly recommended forms of training include walking, jogging, cycling and dynamic power training. Over a period of three to four months,a gradual increase in activity–for example, a daily training period of 15 to 20 minutes–should be the aim. However, an intensification of general physical activities may also lower blood pressure, irrespective of other risk factors.

Mystic Marathon Gives Economy Quite A Boost

So how much money does the Mystic Country Marathon pump into the our local economy?

Well, depending on what figure you want to believe, October’s sixth annual race generated $494,220 in actual dollars for East Lyme and the surrounding towns and as much as $1.1 million, if you trust the multipliers used by economists.

After this year’s event, race director John Bysiewicz sent e-mails to all 1,524 finishers in the marathon, marathon relay, 10-miler and kids’ race. Twenty-five percent of the runners responded, detailing how much they spent on food, lodging, shopping and other items while in the area.

Based on that figure, it is estimated that runners and their families spent $278,922. In addition, this year’s Niantic Bay Festival, held in conjunction with the race, attracted approximately 3,000 people who spent an average of $15.43 per person, accounting for another $46,440. Add these two figures to the race budget and you have a grand total of $494,222 actually being spent during race weekend

Unbelievable! At almost 50, Abbas Mohammed returns to marathon

Former national marathon champion, Abbas Mohammed, has sensationally revealed that nothing would stop him from coming back to marathon next year.

Abbas, who was the king of marathon for over a decade in the country, explained that he quit the sport that brought him fame and fortune, not because he was tired, but because the game went into limbo due to lack of sponsors.

The forty-something-year-old army officer, who was in Obudu recently as an officiating officer for the Obudu Mountain Race, told Sunday Sunsport in an exclusive interview that lack of sponsors had been responsible for Nigeria’s inability to do well at international championships.

Abbas, who expressed happiness with the emergence of the Obudu Mountain Race, said the huge prize money tagged on both the mountain race and the new MTN 42km race was largely responsible for his U-turn to the game.
