Woman killed in road while aiding dying dog

Brenda Stuck was always trying to help.

About 9:32 p.m. Thursday, she was jogging with friend Tami McCall — and McCall’s dog, Mac — along the Southeast Outer Road of U.S. 65, about two miles north of Branson.

Mac, a black Labrador-St. Bernard mix, ran into the road and was hit by a car.

Stuck ran out to help the dog, while McCall looked for someone with a cell phone to call for help.

That’s when Stuck was hit by a 1994 Chrysler Concorde driven by Jodi Lilly, 37, of Branson.

Stuck died early Friday at St. John’s Hospital. She was 43.

Rescuers call off search for runner missing on Cougar Mountain

Follow up to  Missing Runner

King County sheriff’s Deputy Peter Linde stood in the rain near a Cougar Mountain trailhead Sunday afternoon and shook his head.

For the third straight day, King County search and rescue teams combed an 11-square-mile area, desperately searching for Michael Schreck — the Issaquah man and father of two teenagers who left for a Friday morning run and never returned.

Searchers brought dogs, horses and twice scanned the area with heat sensors by helicopter. But early Sunday evening, they seemed to have no more solid leads than they did two days earlier, and Linde looked at a Cougar Mountain map as though it were a Rubik’s Cube.

“This guy just disappeared,” he said.

Running With Mystic canceled, state back to just one marathon

Well, it looks like Connecticut is down to one marathon again.

Organizers of the Mystic Country Marathon have confirmed that they will no longer produce a 26.2 mile race in Eastern Connecticut in October. Instead, a shorter race, the Niantic Bay Half Marathon, will be held in the same area the last Sunday in September.

A 5K will be held in conjunction with the half.

“It will be a really nice course,” said John Bysiewicz, who has directed the event since its inception six years ago. “The marathon course was nice too, but it had some sections that weren’t so good. Plus, by holding the race a week earlier, we’ll be able to use the beach for the post-race activities.”

5k Walk/Race to honor VT shooting victim and PSU alum Jeremy Herbstritt

Following the tragic events this week at Virginia Tech, a groundswell of sentiment has emerged for local man Jeremy Herbstritt, a Penn State grad and avid runner who died during the Virginia Tech shootings.

Those emotions have given rise to the Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial 5K Walk/Race, which will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 at the IM Building on Penn State’s University Park campus.

Proceeds will go to the just-established United Way Memorial Fund for Jeremy Herbstritt. Registration is $10. Entry forms will be available soon. Participants may also register at the event from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

Jeremy’s passion for life continues to be an inspiration for many. I knew him as a relay team captain in the Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK 50 Mile Relay and Ultramarathon, where he fielded teams for three years that included three siblings, and his mom, Peg, volunteered.

It hurts to see a loss like this, but a positive unifying energy that Jeremy would champion emerges behind a race like this. See you all there!
