Carson girls turning heads with feats in track

They notice the whispers.

They hear others talking as they walk by.

“There goes that Carson girl,” they’ll say.

Whether it’s Micsha Carson, 17, or her sister, Hannah, 13, and whether they’re in Illinois or California, the reactions from others are always the same.

“There goes that Carson girl,” they’ll say. “Man, she’s good.”

The Carson sisters, along with the other athletes in the Chandler-based Arizona Cheetahs track and field club, have made names for themselves during this summer’s track and field national meets.

“It’s kind of surprising,” Micsha said of the recognition. “It feels good that they know who you are and oh, I don’t know who they are.”

Micsha, who is entering her senior season at Chandler High, had a breakout showing at the USA Youth Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Lisle, Ill., this month. She won medals in all three of her events (long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles) in the young women division.

Confidence is the key for Lindsey Hollenshead

After the other competitors have gone off to take care of post-race aches and pains, a lone runner keeps going. Ironically, Lindsey Hollenshead was probably one of the first to cross the finish line, but dedication drives her to go the extra mile - literally.

Hollenshead, 18, is a distance runner for James Buchanan High School’s cross country and track and field teams. The 2007 JB graduate is not just an average runner either. She set a new JB cross country course record and school record this year and found success in postseason races. Not bad for someone who didn’t pick up the sport until the summer before her freshman year.

“I’ve just always had the desire to run,” Hollenshead said. “I just really enjoy doing it. I guess I’m built for it and not everyone is.”

Century boys track and field team tops Big Nine

Brian Wille took it for his Rochester Century team.

Then, he took it to the garbage can, where he hovered for about 20 minutes, waiting to throw up.

For Wille, it was all worth it. After all, he’d gone a long way toward bringing his Panthers the team title in Friday’s Big Nine Conference track and field meet. He’d done it by gutting it out in the two most grueling racers there are at the high school level, the 1,600 and the 3,200 meters.

Dunns’ running history

There’s a reason the word run rhymes with the word Dunn.

About 11 years ago, the Dunn family was introduced to high school running in the area. Just about every year since, one of the family members has been at the top or near the top of the area’s charts.

After tonight, just under a dozen Dunn years of running will be over, as Warner Christian senior twin duo Kelsey and Daniel Dunn will compete in the Class 1A state track and field championships at Showalter Field in Winter Park.

“I guess it’s kind of sad,” said the softspoken Kelsey, who will join her twin on scholarship at Florida Southern this fall. “Hopefully I’ll finish with a good meet, with a good time and place. But I also know I’ll still be running next year.”
