The Second Annual “Northglenn Paint The Town 5K Run/Walk” will benefit the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Assn. of Northglenn(CPAAAN) and the Northglenn Community Foundation, two groups who provide assistance to families in Northglenn,will be held on August 26th at the Marketplace at Northglenn.. Both organizations are 501(c) 3 tax exempt and course was officially certified by the USATF on July 15, 2006. The certification code is: CO-06028-DP.

The Northglenn “All About Art Festival” will also be held on August 25th and August 26th at the Marketplace at Northglenn. The theme for this year is “Wild & Wacky”.

Loma Linda Lopers jogging to Riverside

The Loma Linda Lopers, runners and walkers who have been seen on the streets of Loma Linda in pink T-shirts every Sunday morning for 30 years, are opening a new chapter in Riverside.

Now called The Lopers Club, the group of at times up to 1,200 members will hold simultaneous meetings each Sunday at the campus of Loma Linda University and at California Citrus State Historical Park in Riverside. The meetings will be held at 6:30 a.m. beginning this Sunday.

The club’s president, Jim Walling, said that its trademark bright pink T-shirts are for safety, providing extra visibility on the roads, but that the color has brought it more attention than anything else it’s done.

The Loma Linda Lopers, which is adding a Riverside chapter and becoming The Lopers Club, provides trademark pink T-shirts, mainly for safety, though they have attracted the attention of passers-by.

“People see us on the roads and say ‘Who are those guys? I want to join them,’ ” Walling said.

Grey Rock ready to run

In only its third year, Saturday’s Grey Rock 50K Trail Run in the Ahtanum has transformed itself from a seemingly doomed endeavor into a legitimate fundraising event … and an ultramarathon of growing renown.

After attracting just seven starters (six of whom actually finished) for its 2005 debut, the Grey Rock 50K drew

10 entrants last year and another six to the accompanying 25K run. And this year those numbers will essentially double, with 23 to 25 runners expected to line up for the 50K and 10 to 12 in the 25K. A half-dozen entrants are coming from outside Washington.

“The first year I thought, that’s it, we’re toast, this thing’s never going to fly,” said Gailon Gentry, who organizes the event as a fundraiser for the Ahtanum Valley Museum. “But it’s been good. The first couple of years it made a little money, and this year could pull in about $1,500 for a little, tiny museum society.

“It’s been kind of neat how this thing has turned around.”

Hudsonville 5K scheduled Aug. 18

Signups are under way for the annual Hudsonville Fall Festival 5K race Aug. 18.

The race, which takes place at the city fairgrounds (40th Avenue and Grant), starts at 8 a.m. The event includes a wheelchair division, a mile fun run and a 5K run.

Cost is $15 ($10 for seniors) and $7 for the fun run. For more information, go to classicrace.com.

Because they’re comfortable? Bad answer.

“Someone playing basketball wearing running shoes with no lateral support, or returning from jumping motion with no stability” could end up with a serious inversion ankle sprain, said Dr. James Losito, professor of podiatric biomechanics at Barry University in Miami Shores.

That is, the ankle rolls outward, ligaments stretch and tear and tendons can be damaged.

Ocean Park 5K road race July 27

The 11th running of the Ocean Park 5K road race is scheduled for Friday, July 27, at 7 p.m.

This is one of the few evening races in the state, and always attracts top runners because of its proximity to the Beach to Beacon 10K held in Cape Elizabeth the following weekend.

Runner Christine Snow-Reaser, of Dayton, uses the Ocean Park 5K as a final tune-up for the Beach to Beacon. “It fits in perfectly with my racing and training schedule. It is a flat and fast course that really gets your legs turned over, which is perfect training for the Beach to Beacon,” she said.

The Ocean Park 5K winds through towering pines and along the beach before finishing in the town square in front of hundreds of enthusiastic supporters.

“I love the way the course finishes before a huge crowd in the town square. Pretty much every corner of the course has fans cheering you on,” Snow-Reaser said.

Registration will be held in the Ocean Park Recreation Hall on Colby Avenue beginning at 5 p.m. The entry fee is $15 at the door. A Kids Fun Run will be held at 6:30 p.m. The registration fee for the fun run is $3.

The Asheville Citizen-Times Half-Marathon will be held Sept. 15, and registration is now open.

The half marathon, 5K and WNC PARENT one-mile Fun Run, now in its 8th year, attracts thousands of runners of all ages. The race is presented in partnership with ABCCM (Asheville-Buncombe Community Christian Ministry. Proceeds from the event benefit the Lend-A-Hand Foundation and the Medical Ministry, a partnership between ABCCM and Mission Hospitals.

Salt consists of sodium and chloride, and is important for normal physiologic function. High sweat rates in athletes result in loss of both fluids and sodium. Fluid replacement with hypotonic solutions will lead to incomplete rehydration and possible complications such as hyponatremia, decreased performance, heat cramps, or other heat-related illness. There is significant individual variation in sodium loss during activity. In some the losses can be replaced by normal dietary intake, whereas in others the losses can be dramatic and increased dietary intake is essential. There are various methods to increase sodium intake, such as increased use of table salt on foods, salty snacks, adding salt to sports drinks, and use of salt tablets. Emphasis on replacement of fluids is also important, but care must be taken to avoid overhydration. Simple measures such as recording daily pre- and postexercise body weight can aid in making fluid and sodium ingestion decisions; in some cases, a comprehensive evaluation is necessary.
